District 200 Shares Safety Message In Wake Of Deadly Texas Shooting

WHEATON, IL — Community Unit School District 200 officials shared a heartfelt message with parents about school safety and emotional support measures in the wake of the elementary shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, Tuesday.

"Like me, I imagine that some of our parents are experiencing emotions while ensuring that you are supporting any concerns your child may have," Superintendent Jeff Schuler said in the message, which linked to resources from the National Association of School Psychologists.

Schuler continued, "[W]hen high-profile events like this occur, children will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their fears."

He went on to outline District's 200's school safety measures, which include safety protocols, community partnerships and resources for social and emotional support.

"We recognize parents and community members may have many different emotional reactions, " Schuler wrote. "It is important to remember these emotions are normal when reacting to such a traumatic event."
