Downtown Wheaton Construction Crews To Start Phase 2 In March

Crews will move Martin Memorial Plaza to the north side of Front Street and add updated landscaping.

WHEATON, IL — Wheaton's downtown construction project made swift progress in the fall, but most of the updates weren't noticeable to residents, since they affected the city's water mains and sanitary sewers. The project's second phase, set to begin in March, will take shape before residents' eyes with outdoor updates that include moving Martin Memorial Plaza.

During the spring construction, Martin Plaza will be moved to the north side of Front Street and updated with new landscaping features. The new plaza will be accented with overhead flowers and strings of lights, in addition to a newly built water feature, according to an update in Wheaton Weekly.

The downtown construction plans also include widening the sidewalks downtown and updating signs and banners. In addition, crews will add a "gateway structure" to welcome visitors and residents to the this stretch of downtown Wheaton.

According to village officials, construction will be scheduled to make sure that one lane of traffic stays open on Front Street throughout this phase. They expect occasional closures to allow for concrete trucks and larger items to be moved.

Patch will keep you updated on this project as it continues to unfold.
