Voters Reject Winfield Fire District Tax Hike

The tax hike would have covered costs to staff a long-vacant fire house in the southern portion of the fire district.

Voters in the Winfield Fire Protection District have rejected a tax increase that would have covered costs to resurrect a long-vacant firehouse with the hopes of increasing response time to emergency calls south of the railroad tracks, according to unofficial results.

Sixty percent of DuPage County voters voted against the tax hike while 40.05 percent voted in favor of the increase. The roughly $650,000 tax increase would have allowed the fire district to hire six firefighters and two paramedic units that would be assigned to a fire station along Winfield Road just north of Roosevelt Road, according to the Daily Herald.

The fire district covers unincorporated portions of DuPage County near Wheaton, West Chicago, Warrenville and Carol Stream.
