'High' Coronavirus Transmission Risk Reported In DuPage County

WHEATON, IL — The risk of coronavirus transmission in DuPage County has been upgraded to "high" as of May 26, per an update from health department officials.

As of May 26, there had been 342 coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents in DuPage County over the past seven days. DuPage County's coronavirus hospitalizations had gone up from 4.1 per 100,000 residents to 10.9 per 100,000 residents during that same time period.

In early May, DuPage County's coronavirus transmission rate was upgraded to "medium." At that time, the county had reported 259 coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents over a seven-day period.

“The continued emergence of new COVID-19 variants that cause more infections and spread faster than the original strain of the virus is driving the transition from 'medium' to 'high' community level. To protect those who are most vulnerable, we must stay vigilant, following all precautions to protect our community,” DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala said in a news release.

Ayala added, “Vaccinations remain the most effective tool to protect individuals from hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID-19.”
