Kid's Social Security Info Stolen, Used To File Taxes In Wheaton

According to the IRS, you won't be able to e-file if someone stole your information to file taxes.

WHEATON, IL — Police in Wheaton are investigating an identity theft report in which a resident's child's information was stolen and used to file taxes. The incident was reported around 5 p.m. on April 15, police say.

According to police, a resident who lives in the 1400 block of Castlewood Dr. told them that their child's social security number had been stolen. The suspect or suspects used the stolen information to file taxes, police say.

Victims of identity theft during tax season often discover their information has been stolen once they attempt to electronically file taxes. If their social security number was previously used to file taxes, the IRS says the return will not process.
