WHEATON, IL — The City of Wheaton plans to install more than seven miles of new sidewalks in the coming year in an effort to make navigating the city safer and more accessible. The sidewalks will be added in areas that do not currently have sidewalks, completing a project that had begun in 2022.

The project will be divided into three segments, with work being completed in spring, summer and fall of 2023.

In spring, crews will tackle sidewalk installations that had been planned for fall 2022, but postponed due to a shortage of materials and an employee strike. During this time, workers will install sidewalks on one side of the street at the following locations, per the City of Wheaton website:

This year's sidewalk installation is part of an ongoing effort to ensure there is a sidewalk on one side of every street in the city with the goal making Wheaton more walkable. Streets have been prioritized by type, nearness to a busier street, road design and how close the sidewalk is to the street.
