On July 7, Dave Gutierrez will give a talk on his 2018 book, "Patriots of the Barrio," which highlights Latino soldiers in World War II.

WHEATON, IL — Cantigny Park will host "Patriots of the Barrio" on July 7 as part of its "Date with History" series. Author Dave Gutierrez will speak about his eponymous 2018 book, which brings to light the heroic efforts of Latino soldiers during World War II.

Gutierrez's tale explores the history of a Mexican-American unit that was segregated during the war. He uses true anecdotes to delve into the life of the Company E, 141st Infantry, which was part of the 36th “Texas” Division and was made up of only Mexican-American soldiers, including the author's second cousin, Ramon Gutierrez.
