Rep. Amy Grant Opposes Pritzker's Unfair Tax Hike on Illinois Working Families

Springfield – The Illinois House Republicans have filed House Resolution 153 stating their united opposition to Governor Pritzker’s plan to raise taxes on working families and small businesses through the implementation of a graduated income tax – an “Unfair Tax.”

“The special interests in Springfield are rushing a progressive income tax on working families,” Grant said. “Illinois has had tax hikes and mounting pressure on our economy. Illinois is still recovering from the Great Recession because the growth from 2006-2016 was at .4 percent. If Illinois decides to pass a progressive income tax to fund state government while our surrounding states avoid such a tax, then Illinois will continue to have lag in major economic sectors.

In his Budget Address last week, Governor Pritzker called for the passage of a progressive income tax, however details on the rates were not discussed.

“Residents of DuPage County are concerned that this tax is a trick. Every state in the country should be concerned about growth. Illinois needs to increase investments in health and education through growing the economy and passing wealth to our children. Instead, it seems democrats are supporting the same bills like House Bill 3522. The non-partisan Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability revealed that 77% of Illinois taxpayers would see an increase in their income tax liability for a total of over $5.2 Billion in new taxes. ,”said Rep. Grant.

Governor Pritzker has made it clear in his budget address and early tenure in his first legislative session that he wants the Illinois Progressive Tax Income Bill passed. This bill would increase tax rates significantly for Illinois families.

“I’ve been serving the citizens of DuPage County for close to ten years now. Watching special interests and democrats continually spend money and not bring substantive reform into our budgeting will cement my stance against any progressive income tax. Illinois cannot afford any short falls in our economy yet bad planning of the economy continues under this administration. I stand with the hard-working families of the 42st District in strong opposition to Mike Madigan’s and The Governor’s Tax Plan.”
