Rep. Pete Roskam Votes in Favor of AHCA; Potential Challenger Steps Forward

After Rep. Pete Roskam voted in favor of repealing and replacing Obamacare, Democrat Kelly Mazeski stepped forward to challenge him.

WHEATON, IL — Peter Roskam, who represents Wheaton, Downers Grove and Glen Ellyn, voted in favor of the AHCA, which would repeal and replace Obamacare. The controversial bill was passed in the House by a narrow margin of just four votes on Thursday. Roskam had been reported as previously undecided about the bill.

That same day, Democrat Kelly Mazeski stepped forward to challenge Roskam in the next election, with her personal medical struggles in the foreground of her potential platform. Mazeski, 57, is a breast cancer survivor who once lost health insurance herself. Mazeski’s daughter also suffers from a rare health condition that makes health care a near and dear subject for the west suburban Democrat.

Social media fired back after Roskam voted to repeal Obamacare. Roskam’s website asserts that “under no circumstances can people be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.” But pre-existing conditions to center stage for many social media users who worry about increased costs under the AHCA.

If the health care bill fails to pass the Senate, Roskam may find himself in hot water when his seat is up for re-election in November 2018.
