'Same God' Delves Into Ex-Wheaton College Prof's Hijab Statement

WHEATON, IL --- A new documentary will explore the controversy surrounding a Wheaton College professor who was nearly fired from her job after she posted a photo of herself wearing a hijab on Facebook in 2015. Larycia Hawkins, who was a tenured political science professor at the Christian liberal arts college, initially posted the photo to show solidarity with Muslims after backlash following a 2015 terror attack in Paris and to express that she believed Christians and Muslims worship the same god.

Wheaton College alumnus Linda Midgett directs the documentary about Hawkins, which is entitled 'Same God.' The documentary premiered to a sold-out crowd in Chicago on Friday at the Museum of Broadcast Communications.

When Hawkins shared the image of her wearing a hijab, she accompanied it with a post that read, "I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God. As part of my Advent Worship, I will wear the hijab to work at Wheaton College, to play in Chi-town, in the airport and on the airplane to my home state that initiated one of the first anti-Sharia laws (read: unconstitutional and Islamophobic), and at church."

The post led to Hawkins being placed on administrative leave as the Wheaton College Board of Trustees weighed whether or not she had complied with the school's statement of faith. Ultimately, Hawkins resigned from Wheaton College, whose president, Philip Ryken praised her for her ""sincere faith in Jesus Christ."

"Same God" delves into Hawkins's struggle through personal interviews with the professor, her colleagues, and friends. According to Chicago Tribune, Wheaton College administrators did not participate in the film and Midgett was denied a request to screen the film at Wheaton College.
