WHEATON, IL — Less than 6 months after announcing her bid for Rep. Sean Casten's (D) seat in Illinois's 6th District, former Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti had rescinded her bid. Sanguinetti announced the decision on Oct. 11, according to Ballotpedia.

Sanguinetti wrote that her decision to drop out of the race came with "deep regret" and that she still thought she could came down to a question of "at what cost," Capitol Fax reported.

Sanguinetti said, "There has been enough destruction in the Republican Party from past election cycles, and I choose not to contribute further to it by engaging in a costly and negative campaign against my opponents."

With Sanguinetti's withdrawal, Casten's only challenger is former gubernatorial candidate Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton). Ives, a self-proclaimed conservative, hopes to appeal to the more middle-leaning Democrats in her bid for Casten's seat.

Casten was the first Democrat elected to serve Illinois's typically Republican 6th District since George Collins in 1970. Casten unseated incumbent Pete Roskam (R) in Nov. 2018.
