Ultra Foods Closing in Wheaton

The parent company of Ultra Foods plans to close nine stores and sell 22 Strack & Van Til stores.

WHEATON, IL — The Wheaton Ultra Foods will close as part of a massive store closure and the sale of 22 Strack & Van Til stores. Central Grocers announced Tuesday that nine underperforming Ultra Foods stores will close and its remaining Strack & Van Til stores would stay open under new ownership, The Herald-News reported.

Central Grocers, which is headquartered in Joliet, plans to close the Wheaton Ultra Foods and eight other stores by June 18. The other locations include Chicago Heights, Crestwood, Lansing, Joliet, Forest Park and Calumet Park. According to Chicago Tribune, Teamsters Local 703 filed a lawsuit that suggests the store closures and sales may be part of a larger overhaul by Central Grocers. The lawsuit cites an alleged letter from intent for Central Grocers to "sell its operations and/or facilities."

Wheaton residents can expect discounted items ahead of the store closing. Ultra Foods has been known for offering discounted items in underserved areas.
