Wheaton College Remembers Sept. 11 Hero Todd Beamer

Todd Beamer, who heroically gained control of the cockpit of Flight 93, graduated from Wheaton College in 1991.

WHEATON, IL — Those who remember what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, have probably heard of Todd M. Beamer. Beamer, a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 when it was taken over by hijackers, was one of the people who took control of the cockpit and prevented the plane from reaching its intended target. Beamer also called dispatch and relayed emergency information about the incident.

Flight 93 ultimately crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, killing Beamer and the other passengers.

Beamer, a Michigan native who grew up in Wheaton, was a 1991 graduate of Wheaton College, was honored in 2002 when the college first began planning to build the Todd M. Beamer Student Center. The college reflected on Beamer's bravery in a recent article spotlighting the student center.

The student center was completed in 2004 and bears Beamer's likeness, along with the unforgettable words he was heard saying before storming the cockpit: "Let's roll."
