Wheaton Fourth Of July Festivities, Other Events Canceled

WHEATON, IL — Amid the ongoing new coronavirus shutdown, the Wheaton Park District has canceled its Fourth of July Parade and fireworks celebration, in addition to a number of other events slated for the remainder of spring and summer. The cancellations include the Taste of Wheaton, which was originally set for the week of June 2, along with a temporary postponement of the city's summer concert series.

In an update, Wheaton Park District Executive Director Mike Brainard wrote that the park district is considering the possibility of moving the city's Independence Day festivities to Labor Day weekend.

Wheaton's native plant sale, set for May 30, was also canceled, in addition to the city's municipal band concerts, which were set to kick off June 18. The opening of Memorial Park's Bandshell has been delayed, along with the start of a concert series at the new bandshell. Brainard wrote that the series will be until August, "pending further direction from the state of Illinois."

Brainard wrote, "We are all looking forward to the day when we are once again able to safely come together in the parks to enjoy community celebrations and concerts. We are committed to resuming programs and events as soon as possible, but only once it is safe to do so."
