Wheaton Lowers Speed Limit In Neighborhoods

The speed limit change will begin on August 1. "Drive 25" signs and magnets will be available July 30.

WHEATON, IL — The Wheaton City Council has voted to decrease the speed limit in residential areas from 30 mph to 25 mph. The shift, which was approved Tuesday, is set to go into on August 1, 2018.

In a news release, city officials said crews will begin changing street signage in the coming weeks to reflect the new speed limit. The change — as with recent sidewalk widening projects — is part of a citywide plan to continuously improve public safety.

Most residential areas will reflect the new 25 mph speed limit as of August 1. The following areas that experience heavier traffic will maintain a 30 mph speed limit:

  • 22nd St.
  • Blanchard St. – south of Roosevelt Rd.
  • East Loop Rd.
  • West Loop Rd.
  • Leask Ln.
  • Lorraine Rd. – south of Roosevelt Rd.
  • Main St. – north of Seminary
  • Manchester Rd.
  • Orchard Rd. – south of Wiesbrook Rd.
  • President Street
  • West St. – south of Willow Ave.
  • Warrenville Rd. – south of Roosevelt Rd.
  • Wiesbrook Rd.

Shaffner Rd. and Gary Ave. (north of Harrison) will keep their 35 mph designations.

The city will use electronic signs, street signs, and yard signs to raise awareness for the new 25 mph speed limit.

Starting July 30, residents can also get their own "Drive 25" yard sign or car magnet at city hall while supplies last.
