The national rankings includes data on more than 21,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.
The data reviewed by U.S. News and World Report was based upon the 2012-13 school year and included student math and reading results from each state’s high school proficiency tests.
It also reviewed the academic performance of disadvantaged students — black, Hispanic and low-income — and the percentage of students who took rigorous courses, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate classes. A complete review of its methodology can be viewed here.
Other suburban schools to receive high rankings include: Deerfield High School (No. 7), Highland Park High School (No. 8), Prospect High School (No. 9), Hinsdale Central (No. 11), Libertyville High (No. 13), John Hersey High (No. 14) and Evanston Township High (No. 15).
