Wheaton's First Female Mayor Turns 100

Happy Birthday to Marget "Margy" Hamilton who turned 100 on Saturday.

Marget “Margy” Hamilton, the first female mayor in Wheaton who served in 1917 and then again from 1943 to 1954, turned 100 years old on Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The former mayor is the second mayor in Wheaton’s history to crack the 100-year mark. Former mayor William Gamon died in 1977 just months after turning 100, according to the article.

Some of Hamilton’s accomplishments as mayor included backing construction of a new Wheaton Public Library in 1964, acquiring an insurance company’s building as a new city hall, and supporting the preservation of the old Chicago, Aurora and Elgin railroad right-of-way for some kind of future use, which turned out to become the Illinois Prairie Path, according to newspaper.

One of her biggest accomplishments, Hamilton said, was a fair housing ordinance that banned discrimination in home purchases, according to the Chicago Tribune.

When reached at her senior housing community in Hyde Park over the weekend, Hamilton was in good spirits, according to the newspaper.

“I feel wonderful!” she told the Chicago Tribune.
