Woman Carjacked Outside Target In Wheaton: Cops

Authorities say the suspect "threatened a woman's life" before stealing her car.

WHEATON, IL --- A Chicago man is being held on $500,000 bond after he allegedly carjacked a woman outside of a Target store in Wheaton Wednesday. Police say Demarion Chambers, 22, threatened the victim to get out of her car just after 9 p.m., then stole the car and fled toward West Chicago.

According to police, the woman was sitting in her parked car when Chambers knocked on the window repeatedly. Once she got out of the car, Chambers allegedly drove off and used her credit card to make to purchases at a Thornton's gas station in West Chicago.

Wheaton police conducted an investigation into the carjacking and Chambers was later taken into custody in Chicago.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said, "It is alleged that last night Mr. Chambers threatened a woman’s life before stealing her car. According to the FBI, a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States every 44 seconds. That is an alarming statistic. There are precautions you can take, however, to minimize your chances of becoming a victim - be aware of your surroundings, park in a well-lit area and keep your doors locked and windows up."

Chambers faces felony charges of vehicular hijacking, identity theft, and unlawful use of a credit card. He is set to appear in court on Jan. 7.
