WWEA Member Retirement Spotlight

The WWEA would like to introduce Ms. Sheri Clubb, a 33 year elementary educator with 26 years of teaching in District 200.

The Wheaton Warrenville Education Association (WWEA) would like to introduce Ms. Sheri Clubb, a 33 year elementary educator with 26 years of teaching in District 200. Ms. Clubb just recently retired from Pleasant Hill Elementary School and taught 3rd grade for the previous 14 years. She also taught 7th and 8th grade Reading and Language Arts for 5 years, 5th grade for 12 years, and substituted for 2 years. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Illinois State University, a Masters of Arts degree from Aurora University in Teaching, and an additional Master’s degree from National Louis University in Elementary Math.

Professional Achievements:
Ms. Clubb is most proud of her time running Drama Club at Pleasant Hill. She and a colleague ran this club for 14 years putting on nearly 28 plays. The highlight of her time running Drama Club was when her 5th graders performed for the D200 Board of Education. She said it was such a pleasure to be able to watch students come out of their shell while performing, create the scenery and props, and manage the lighting. Ms. Clubb purchased, mended, and organized the costumes for each show.

School and Extracurricular Activities:
Ms. Clubb volunteered for various committees during her time in District 200 including: (1) Spelling Committee, (2) Social Studies Committee, and (3) Language Arts Critical Content Design. In addition to these committees, while earning her first Master's degree she discovered the importance of a program called Brain Gym. She and a colleague conducted extensive research on the positive impact Brain Gym has on students with ADHD, ADD, Learning Disabilities, and Anxiety. She has been implementing this practice every day since earning her Master’s degree. Ms. Clubb recognizes the importance of movement and how it benefits student learning.

Why Education?
Ms. Clubb is the only teacher in her family and has always had a passion for the field of education. In fact, she was the first person from her father's side of the family to go to college. She felt that even as a young child, she had always had a passion for teaching anyone she could. For Ms. Clubb, teaching is not so much about teaching reading, writing, and math (although she recognizes the importance of that), but giving students the tools they need to become who they are and to help mold them into the people they want to be. Helping her students discover their strengths and weaknesses and teaching them how to use those skills to be the adult they want to be is what is most important. Teaching students to collaborate with one another and understand one another helps to create an environment that is safe, welcoming, and warm, which in the end, is what she feels being a teacher is all about.

Personal Reflection
Ms. Clubb shared that it has been a pleasure working with the most amazing staff over the last 26 years. She has learned from everyone that she’s had the opportunity to work with, and truly understands that it takes a team to teach a child. She doesn't know what she would have done without all the great staff who have inspired her, pushed her, challenged her, and ultimately kept her going when she didn't think she could go anymore. Ms. Clubb is sad to see this chapter in her life come to an end (as are all of the staff at Pleasant Hill), but she knows that just because she is retiring doesn't mean we can keep her away for too long. I mean once a teacher, always a teacher, right?
