$600 In Counterfeit Cash Spent In A Day: Wilmette Crimes

WILMETTE, IL — The following information comes from the Wilmette Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those recently arrested. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt and criminal charges are often dropped or reduced. Everyone is innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

THEFT

Someone stole a red and black Giant brand mountain bike that had been locked to a rack outside a store on the 3200 block of Lake Avenue between 5:10 p.m. and 5:35 p.m. on Aug. 1.

COUNTERFEIT MONEY

On Aug. 3, police were told a man paid with four counterfeit $100 bills at four different businesses in Plaza Del Lago, 1515 Sheridan Rd. At the fifth attempt, an employee at Giggles and Giraffes rejected the fake money and reported it to police at 4:30 p.m. The man was described as a tall, 30 to 40-year-old black man with short hair. He was last seen driving a white van.

Police received another report of counterfeit $100 bills being spent in Wilmette on Aug. 3. Sometimes between 3:25 p.m. and 3:35 p.m., a suspect described as 5-foot, 11-inches to 6-foot, 1-inches tall black man between 30 and 45 years of age with curly, medium-length hair passed a pair of fake "Benjamins" to a bakery and a pet shop on the 600 block of Green Bay Road.

IDENTITY THEFT

On Aug. 3 at 6 p.m., police were told that someone in Washington had used the identity of a Wilmette resident to buy a Porsche and deliver it to Calumet City.

AUTO BURGLARY (ATTEMPT)

On Aug. 3 at 9:14 p.m., a resident in the 900 block of Ashland Avenue heard the car alarm of his locked BMW sounding. The vehicle was parked in the back of his property down a long driveway, where he told police he saw an unidentified man or boy crouching down by his vehicle before fleeing on foot. No suspect was located.

AUTO BURGLARY

A construction worker in the 2200 block of Thornwood Avenue found found insurance and registration cards on the parkway belonging to car registered to an owner in the 2200 block of Chestnut Avenue at 8 a.m. on Aug. 5.

AUTO BURGLARY

A resident of the 1200 block of Cleveland Street reported that someone had rummaged through a Lexus that had been parked on the driveway between 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 and 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 6. It was not immediately clear to the owner if anything was taken.

FOUND PROPERTY

Someone found an Apple Smart Watch at while attending the Wilmette Fest in the 1100 block of Central Avenue between 2 p.m. on July 22 and 2 p.m. on July 23.

THEFT (JEWELRY)

A resident in the 1100 block of Virginia Lane reported that about $3,300 worth of jewelry had gone missing between March 2 and July 24.

THEFT (PATIO FURNITURE)

A resident in the 400 block of Beverly Drive reported that someone stole four wrought iron patio chairs from the backyard between 9 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 10 a.m. on Aug. 6.


ARRESTS

A 54-year-old Chicago woman was stopped for a traffic violation in the 900 block of Green Bay Road, found to have no valid driver's license and arrested at 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 4.
