Wilmette Police Swear In First Electronic Detection, Comfort Dog

WILMETTE, IL — Wilmette police have officially sworn in Gizmo, the department's first electronic detection and comfort dog.

Gizmo, a two-year-old half-lab and half-golden retriever, will assist investigators in locating digital devices for criminal investigations and also provide support and a calming presence to victims, witnesses, community members and first responders.

Police Chief Michael Robinson said the dog's work will add a new tool for investigators while also expanding the department's community-facing role.

"He's evolving the role of policing in our community. As an electronic detection dog, Gizmo helps investigators locate digital devices, which can be critical pieces of evidence in criminal investigations," Robinson said.

The department said Gizmo joined Wilmette police through the U.S. Secret Service and the National Computer Forensics Institute. He is handled by Police Department Analyst Sam Walker, who serves as a Task Force Officer with the U.S. Secret Service.

The appointment places Gizmo in a specialized role tied to criminal investigations, where digital devices can become evidence. At the same time, the comfort dog role is intended to bring support during difficult moments for people interacting with police and emergency personnel.

"We're excited to have this four-legged officer on the team, and look forward to the positive impact they'll have on our department and throughout the community," Robinson said.
