WILMETTE, IL — Wilmette police are warning residents about a social media trend known as the "Door Kick Challenge," which has been reported in town and by law enforcement agencies nationwide.

The Wilmette Police Department said the trend involves individuals kicking or pounding on residential doors, often late at night, and recording the reaction for social media.

According to the Wilmette Police Department, law enforcement agencies nationwide have seen a dramatic surge in reports of the behavior, and there have been incidents reported throughout Wilmette. The village described the activity as criminal behavior and said it can create safety risks for residents and for the people taking part.

While some participants may see it as a prank, the village said the conduct can cause property damage, frighten residents and potentially lead to dangerous confrontations or criminal charges. The village also urged parents and guardians to speak with children and teenagers about the trend and its consequences. Participating in the conduct can result in arrest, financial liability for property damage or serious physical injury.

"No social media post is worth a criminal prosecution or a preventable tragedy," the village said in the alert.

The village is asking residents to remain alert and report incidents so Wilmette police can respond appropriately. Residents shouldn't open the door, confront the people involved or pursue them if they hear banging late at night. Instead, residents should stay securely inside and check outside using a window or security camera.

Wilmette police also advised residents to call 911 right away if they believe people are damaging property or if there is an immediate safety concern.

The department further asked residents to safely document incidents and share any evidence with officers. That can include video footage, descriptions of the individuals involved, vehicle information, license plates and direction of travel, according to the village.

Anyone with active information, video footage or knowledge about local "Door Kick Challenge" incidents is urged to contact the Wilmette Police Department at 847-256-1200.
