Arrest Made 2 Hours After Theft at Lake Ave. Shell

Wilmette police say the Buffalo Grove man reached over the counter to steal $20 bills from the cash register on Valentine's Day.

WILMETTE, IL - A Buffalo Grove man has been charged in a Valentine’s Day theft at the Lake Ave. Shell station in Wilmette in which an offender was reported to have reached over the counter to grab several $20 bills during a small transaction.

A store clerk told police that around 11:17 p.m. Sunday night the man, a caucasian who dressed in all black entered the store, made a small purchase of $2 “and while the cash register drawer was opened, the subject reached across the counter and grabbed several $20 bills.”

Somewhere between $200 and $500 was reported stolen.

The man fled in a dark blue vehicle and headed eastbound.

Less than two hours later, Glencoe police took Stanislaw Zhupavel, 24 into custody after spotting a vehicle that matched the description of the one used in the Shell theft.

According to police, Zhupavel admitted to the crime and provided a written statement. He was charged with misdemeanor theft.
