Alzheimer's Educational Workshops for Families Coming In August

Are you caring for an aging parent or relative with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias? Free family caregiver workshops coming in August.

Beginning in August, Home Instead Senior Care of Skokie will be offering a series of free educational workshops for families on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. These workshops are open to the public, and will take place on the last Thursday of the month starting in August at the Wilmette Public Library. The workshops focus on helping families understand the disease, as well as learning strategies and techniques for managing challenging behaviors. The series includes four workshops that will be led by Tania Herbert, a trained professional from our office. Family caregivers can attend all or any combination of the workshops offered. The following are brief descriptions of what you can expect to gain from each workshop:

Alzheimer's Disease or Other Dementias

DATE: Thursday, August 30th, 6:30pm - 8:00pm

This workshop will help you: Learn about the causes of Alzheimer's disease or other dementias, recognize the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and discover how Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are diagnosed. Understand more about the behaviors that can be caused by the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

Capturing Life's JourneySM

DATE: Thursday, September 27th, 6:30pm -  8:00pm

This workshop will help you: Discover how the "Capture Life's Journey"  technique can help you and others provide the best care for your loved one. Learn techniques to encourage your loved one to share their stories and memories. Become familiar with the format of a Life Journal and how to record information about your loved one's past. Find out how to use a Life Journal in partnership with professional caregivers.

Techniques to Handle Challenging Behaviors

DATE: Thursday, October 25th, 6:30pm -  8:00pm

This workshop will help you:  Learn more about the challenging behaviors that may be displayed by those with Alzheimer's or other dementias. Discover techniques to help handle these behaviors. Determine what techniques work best to manage different types of behaviors.

Activities to Encourage Engagement

DATE: Thursday, November 29th, 6:30pm -  8:00pm

This workshop will help you: Learn about the benefits of staying active for a person with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. Learn about three types of activities - for mind, body, and soul . Discover various techniques to encourage your loved one to engage in an activity. Become familiar with activities that are suitable for late stage Alzheimer's disease or other dementias that will help to stimulate your loved one's five senses.
