An Invitation to Learn
Providing an invitation for children to engage, explore and discover.

The latest snowfall created quite a stir over at Growth Spurts. As the snow fell and noses and hands were pressed against our huge glass windows, I overheard some little ones asking about the animals. They wanted to know what they do when it snows, how do they stay warm, what do they eat and where do they live. To take advantage of their wonder and natural curiosity, I gathered a few props and materials from around the play space for our indoor enviornment. My hope was that the children would explore and represent what they were talking in a more personal and meaningful way.
Through my years of work at Wilmette Community Nursery School and Summer Stuff Day Camps, I have found that when I thoughtfully present props and materials with a specific focus in mind, children are delighted to discover, explore and engage. Creating invitations to learn can be done in all areas of the classroom or in your own home. You just need a little imagination!
