Northfield Teen Arrested Twice in One Night

After picking up a DUI charge, the 18-year-old was allegedly seen by police rolling a garbage can across Wilmette Ave. two hours later.

A Northfield man was arrested by Wilmette police twice in one night, first for a DUI and then just two hours later for damage to village property.

Police reports indicate Japheth C. Tan, 18, of the 1800 block of Abbot Ct. in Northfield, was stopped for a traffic violation at 12:11 a.m. Monday and was arrested for driving under the influence after failing field sobriety tests. At the police station, he allegedly had a BAC of .123 when given a breathalyzer test.

After being released on an I-bond, police say they spotted Tan and Simon Urbietis, 18, of the 400 block of Sunset Drive in Wilmette (the one who bonded out Tan) at Wilmette Ave. and Hunter Road around 2:27 a.m.

While walking westbound, Tan and Urbietis were seen throwing a sign into the street. “Both subjects crossed the street and tipped over a village owned cement garbage container from the southwest corner and roll it across Wilmette Ave. causing the cement garbage container to crack at the top and break off,” according to a report.

Tan and Urbietis were taken into custody and issued local ordinances for damage to village property and minor in consumption of alcohol.

Due to their age and intoxicated state, both were released to their parents.
