Teen Girl Accused Of Uber Driver Murder Hospitalized, Misses Court

Eliza Wasni missed her scheduled arraignment Wednesday due to an undisclosed medical issue.

SKOKIE, IL — The 16-year-old Chicago girl charged with murder after allegedly hacking to death an Uber driver missed a scheduled court appearance Wednesday due to a hospitalization. Neither Eliza Wasni's public defender nor Cook County prosecutors disclosed where the accused juvenile was admitted or offered any details on the nature of her medical condition, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Wasni's arraignment has been delayed until Monday at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, at which point she will have the opportunity to enter a plea.

She has been detained at a juvenile facility, although she is being tried as an adult, as is automatic in first-degree murder cases.

Wasni has been charged with fatally stabbing 34-year-old Grant Nelson, of Wilmette, in Lincolnwood shortly after stealing a knife and a machete from a Skokie Walmart.

Police said she was found nearby with the apparent murder weapons in hand after shedding a bloody Chicago Cubs shirt while attempting to flee the scene.

Nelson's family last week filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Walmart alleging its security contractors did not follow their own procedures when they allowed Wasni to walk out of the Skokie store around 3 a.m. prior to using the Uber app to summon the driver who she has been accused of killing.

UPDATE, Monday, July 10:

Wasni also did not appear in court for her rescheduled arraignment Monday, according to a spokesperson for the the Cook County State's Attorney.
