Text-A-Tip Helps Over 100 Students in New Trier Township

Since the March 2016 launch of Text-A-Tip in New Trier Township, 111 system users have generated 1,222 texts seeking help.

Since the March 2016 launch of Text-A-Tip in New Trier Township, 111 system users have generated 1,222 texts for the period covering 3/14/16—12/31/16.

At the nine-month mark, LEAD (Linking Efforts Against Drugs), a Lake Forest based non-profit that administers the program for New Trier Township, shared statistics on the primary reasons students in grades 5-12 are using the text lines:

  • Sad/Depressed 11.9%
  • Friend/Relationship Conflict 9.2%
  • Drugs 6.4%
  • Bullying 6.2%
  • Self Harm/Cutting (Other) 6.2%

Monitoring other trends, some students point out “family conflict” (Parents 4.6%) and (Siblings 2.1%) as causes for concern. If we combine those trends, “family” is another significant source of student angst in a variety of forms.

LEAD and New Trier Township have been in communication with local school officials, seeking frequent reminders about the Text-A-Tip program to their students. The Township has also established a Text-A-Tip Facebook Group, seeking to engage parents, guardians, local media, and community members in the dialog. At this writing, 71 members are involved in the group.

New Trier Township students (public and private) in grades 5-12 are receiving immediate acknowledgement of their issue(s), helpful dialog with trained clinical professionals, and appropriate referrals to local counselors for in-depth support.
