Thieves Return Bathroom Items, But Not Dress: Cops
The latest Wilmette police reports include an item about tools stolen from a home under construction.

The following information is from the Wilmette Police Department. An arrest is not an indication of guilt.
Retail Theft
Officers responded to Bed, Bath & Beyond, 3232 Lake Ave. for a retail theft in progress that occurred from 7:25 p.m. to 7:39 p.m. on Dec. 28. Offenders had fled the scene before officers arrived. The manager reported that two black women and one black man entered the store and left with merchandise without paying for it.

Theft
A Wilmette resident reported that he put his personal items in a locker at the Wilmette Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview with his own padlock at 1 p.m. on Dec. 28. When he returned later he found that his wallet had been gone through and his debit and credit card were missing. The victim stated that the padlock was not damaged.

Theft
A resident of the 100 block of Woodbine reported on Dec. 27 that unknown offender(s) had taken two packages delivered by UPS and left on the front porch. On Dec. 28 one package was returned to the porch after being opened. The package returned contained bathroom items. The second package contained a dress that was not returned.
DUI/Motor Vehicle Crash
Stephanie Portela, 21, Chicago was charged at 1:17 a.m. on Jan. 4 after police responded to the report of a motor vehicle off the roadway with an unresponsive female motorist inside. The investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle had been travelling east on Lake Ave and drove off the roadway near the entrance to eastbound I-94. The vehicle struck a light pole and guardrail before coming to rest. The driver was taken to Skokie Hospital for treatment and blood and urine testing and released to Wilmette Police Officers. She was charged with DUI and other minor traffic violations and released on an I-Bond.
Burglary
Unknown offender(s) entered a home under construction in the 1800 block of Wilmette Ave. between 8 a.m. and 9:09 a.m. on Jan. 4, pried open a toolbox located on the first floor and stole several tools. Workers who were on site working on the second floor did not hear or see the offender(s).
