Update: Callaghan Indicted for Theft, Fraud

A six-count indictment for theft and computer fraud was handed up Friday against former Wilmette Park District employee in the Skokie branch of the county criminal court. 

Callaghan was for allegedly embezzling more than $10,000 over a year’s span while working at the Wilmette Golf Course. He is accused of undercharging individuals and pocketing the difference, according to Cook County State’s Attorney spokesman Andy Conklin.

Callaghan, 49, resigned in the wake of the allegations after he had worked at the golf course nearly 23 years. 

He was formally charged with four counts of theft as a Class 2 felony. Each claim carries a prison sentence of 3 to 7 years in prison, Conklin said.

The former golf pro was also accused of two counts of computer fraud. One is a Class 3 felony with a penalty of 2 to 5 years in jail. The other is a Class 4 crime that could lead to a 1 to 3 years of incarceration. 

Callaghan is scheduled to be arraigned on the six charges at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 1 in the Skokie before a Cook County Circuit Court judge. At that time, he is expected to enter a plea.
