Valentine's Day is a "Drag" for the Wilmette Theatre

Patch's preview of the upcoming "Love is a Many Gendered Thing" drag show performance at the Wilmette Theatre.

is offering up an alternative to the candelit dinner for Valentine's Day.

“We get a bad rap up here in the suburbs so we wanted to shake things up a little bit.” said the Theatre's marketing director Nili Yelin, "I’m really passionate about diverse entertainment and exposing people to things that they wouldn’t go out of their way to see."

The Theatre has hosted five drag shows since 2008, but this is the first performance they've geared towards couples instead of just women, according to Yelin.

“We want to show men that it’s not scary or unmanly to come to a drag show," she said.

These performances give residents a chance to see unconventional entertainment that they usually have to trek into the city for, according to Vikki Spykke*, who is one of the drag queens performing.

“We’ll be doing a dozen individual numbers and each one is a different number with a different costume and charatcter," Spykkes said, who also produces the show.

"I think it’s going to be awesome and I’m excited about it," Esposito, a Chicago-based comedian, told Patch. "The audiences I’ve performed for in the suburbs want to see something unusual."

While the show's content is geared towards adults, Spykke said its something young or old people can enjoy.

"The the idea is to come out and have a good time and play with us."
