Wilmette Launches Blue Envelope Program

The new police program aims to better support individuals on the autism spectrum during police interactions.

WILMETTE, IL — The Wilmette Police Department has launched its Blue Envelope Program, designed to foster safer and more positive interactions between police and individuals on the autism spectrum.

Through the new program, participants can safely communicate with police that they have unique communication and support needs. The goal is to help reduce misunderstandings, stress and anxiety for everyone involved.

Participants in the program receive a distinctive blue envelope that can be presented to any Wilmette Police Officer during encounters. The envelope acts as a quick form of identification and a visual cue that an individual may require additional support.
