Robert J. Bates, age 87, of Wilmette. Beloved husband of the late Lenore A. Bates, nee Dobbeck; loving father of Robert J., Jr (Ann) Bates, Christopher J. (Sherry) Bates, John J. Bates (Mara Sprain), Joseph A. (Beth) Bates and Thomas A. (Mary) Bates; dear grandfather of Lesley (Chad) Shifrin, Emily (Owen) Schnaper, Brett (Christine), Michelle, Amy (Christopher) Miller, Amanda, Carl and Christopher; great grandfather of Natalie, Molly and Charlie.

Visitation, Thursday, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Friday, 9:15 a.m. from Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL 60077 to Sacred Heart Church, 1077 Tower Road, Winnetka, IL 60093, Mass 10:00 a.m. Interment Sacred Heart Cemetery.
