This is the second bat to test positive for rabies in Cook County this year. The first was discovered in Park Ridge in May.

Public health officials reminded residents not to handle bats. Anyone who believes they were exposed to or bitten by a bat was urged to contact their physician immediately.

Pet owners should make sure their animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, officials said, and kept leashed and supervised while outdoors.

If a sick or injured bat is found on your property or in a public area, residents should call Cooc County Animal and Rabies Control at 708-974-6140.
