83rd Street Bridge Construction Begins April 20

The 83rd Street Bridge over I-355 closure is starting on Monday, April 20, 2020, which is expected to last approximately one and a half months, weather permitting. The signed detour route should be followed in order to avoid the construction zone. A pedestrian route across the bridge will remain open during construction. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has stated that construction of infrastructure projects is considered essential work therefore, the construction of the project is proceeding per IDOT.

IDOT, which holds the contract for the resurfacing work on the 83rd Street Bridge, and the Village of Woodridge, which owns the bridge deck, jointly determined that there were material quality issues with the deck work that was recently completed by D Construction.

While there are no structural concerns, there are cracks in the new surface overlay – which will ultimately shorten the lifespan of the bridge deck work. Consequently, crews will need to remove the concrete and repour it. The result of this work will be a longer-lasting and improved bridge deck.
