WOODRIDGE, IL — A Woodridge man faces multiple felonies after police say he fled cops, hit two cars, backed into a squad car and then crashed into bushes.
Laron Robinson, 19, of the 7700 block of Deer Street, was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding and criminal damage to government supported property in connection with the Oct. 2. incident. Robinson was also charged with over 30 petty traffic offenses and misdemeanors.
Police say they tried to pull Robinson over around 8 p.m. after they saw him activate his left turn signal on Woodward before getting into the right lane and making a right turn.
Robinson is accused of fleeing at a high rate of speed and disregarding stop signs at two intersections.
According to police, the officer lost sight of Robinson after he turned southbound on Springside.
Around 8:04 p.m., a crash was reported involving a car that matched Robinson's near the intersection of Devereaux and 75th. A subsequent crash was reported at Lemont Road and Woodmere Drive involving the same car.
Robinson's car was spotted by Darien police around 8:42 p.m. in the 8000 block of Windsor Drive. An officer said they tried to pull Robinson over, but Robinson is accused of trying to drive away at speeds of around 50 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Robinson is also accused of driving head-on toward the officer before passing them on the wrong side of the street.
Robinson is accused of continuing to flee and driving toward oncoming traffic in the 7800 block of Lemont Road. As the officer continued to pursue Robinson, police say he drove into oncoming traffic near Lyman Avenue and Manning Road and hit speeds of 70 mph in a zone with a 45 mph speed limit.
Police say the officer tried to block Robinson into a driveway in the 900 block of Rob Roy Place. Robinson is accused of backing into the officer's car before driving forward and getting stuck in the bushes at the end of the driveway.
"The allegations that Mr. Robinson led officers from multiple jurisdictions on an extremely dangerous high-speed chase during which he drove through residential neighborhoods, at times on the wrong side of the road and crashed into two vehicles on separate occasions are outrageous," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
Berlin added, "What I find particularly disturbing is the allegation that once he was boxed in, Mr. Robinson refused to give up and was only into custody when his car got stuck after he crashed into an officer's squad car. In DuPage County, we have absolutely zero tolerance for this type of dangerous behavior that put countless innocent motorists at risk, and anyone who commits such an act will be apprehended, charged and fully prosecuted."
Robinson is being held at DuPage County Jail and is set to appear in court Nov. 2.
