Athlete Of The Week: Cory Mosiman

Downers Grove South's midfielder, soccer team captain is profiled in the latest installment.

midfielder Cory Mosiman’s season took a brief, but scary, left turn in the first half against Naperville Central on Saturday when he got into a nasty collision going for the soccer ball.

Mosiman had to be helped off the field and was noticeably limping for a few minutes. He recovered and continued to deliver solid defensive and offensive play, though the overmatched Mustangs wound up losing 2-0 to the Redhawks.

For a team that is short on veteran experience after graduating so many players last season, Mosiman is someone who can lead by example and he did so on Saturday by fighting through his injury, which he doesn’t think is serious.

“Think it’s nothing but a bad bruise,” he said. “After a few days I’ll be fine.”

After he graduates, he plans to go to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and major in civil engineering. He is Woodridge’s Athlete of the Week.

So how long have you been playing soccer? I started playing the game when I was 4.

You played club soccer with the Chicago Fire Juniors. What was the experience like? It’s a very good club. I grew a lot as a player and some of the guys I play with now were also there.

Was your family an influence in soccer? Not really. Me and my brothers used to play together when we were younger, but they went into other sports. I was the only one who stuck to soccer.

Is there a soccer player you really admire or a favorite team? I don’t really watch a lot of soccer, actually. But if I had to pick I would say Landon Donovan (midfielder for the L.A. Galaxy and U.S. National Team).

You also run track during the spring. What’s your event? I run the mile and the two-mile. I qualified for state indoors in the two-mile.

This is a pretty young team this year. Are you optimistic about the future, even after today’s tough loss? Yeah. I mean, we’ve already grown a lot as a team. Our defense is very compact and we’ve got a lot of young talent. I think we’ll use it for the better as the season goes along and I think we’ll make a run in the playoffs.
