Boys Basketball: DGS Sinks Pirates, Wins Conference Title

Downers South 60, Proviso East 48: Mustangs' balanced, aggressive play on both ends keeps Pirates far behind throughout game.

The Hot Read: Downers South jumped to a fast start against Proviso East, scoring 20 first-quarter points. The Mustangs’ dominated on both sides of the ball, keeping the Pirates behind by at least double digits for almost the entire game. The Mustangs' win also gives them the WSC Gold Conference title. 

Patch’s MVP: Mustangs guard Jerron Wilbut led the Mustangs with 16 points and added six rebounds. Even more impressive, though, was his defense against guards Keith Carter and Paris Lee in the backcourt, minimizing their performance with smart, aggressive play. 

Key stats: The Mustangs' defense did an exceptional job in the first half, holding the Pirates to 13 points on 6 of 25 shooting.

Downers South’s leaders: In addition to Wilbut: Jamaal Millison (12 points, five rebounds), Ziggy Riauka (11 points, eight rebounds). 

Proviso East’s leaders: Sterling Brown (17 points, four rebounds, three blocks), Keith Carter (10 points), Paris Lee (eight points, four steals).

Records: Downers South: 22-3, 10-1 in WSC Gold Conference. Proviso East: 19-4, 9-2 

What’s next: Proviso East plays Lyons Township on Saturday at the UIC Pavilion in the City-Suburban Showdown. Downers South plays its conference finale at home against Addison Trail on Wednesday.
