Downers Grove South Student Awarded Summer Study Trip to Germany

Alex Hartig, a junior at Downers Grove (IL) South High School, recipient of an American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) summer study trip to Germany.

Alex Hartig, a junior at Downers Grove (IL) South High School, has been awarded a three-and-a-half week all-expense-paid summer study trip to Germany.

Hartig was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 96th percentile on the Level Three 2013 National German Exam for High School Students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Nearly 23,000 students participated in the program. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, Alex submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German.

Alex was selected to receive the Helene Zimmer-Loew Scholarship from the AATG Endowed Scholarship Fund, a fund supported through generous donations from teachers of German across the US to support study in Germany. The study trip includes round‐trip air transportation to Germany, a home-stay with a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. The study trip award is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany.

“This program gives students the chance to experience Germany firsthand by living with a German family and attending school,” said Keith Cothrun, Executive Director of the AATG. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Alex and the other winners will travel to Germany this summer.  He is currently scheduled to travel to Bad Reichenhale, Germany located in southern Bavaria near the Austrian border. Alex is a student of Mrs. Karen Kosog, and Mrs. Sarah Moreno, German teachers at Downers Grove South High School.
