Happy New Year Woodridge, welcome to 2013!

Making pledges are best left to politicians. They bring them out at election time, dust them off, and hope you’ve forgotten about the last time they “pledged” something. I’m more interested in getting things done, and when you look back at what I’ve accomplished I think you will agree.

I’ve had a couple of people ask me about running for Mayor even though I’ve never held an elected office before. The first thing I do is thank them for pointing out that I’m not a politician. I’m not part of the club, not looking to move to the next higher office, and not running because it’s my turn.  I’m looking to make Woodridge the best it can be. Then I ask them what qualifications they think a Mayor should have. What are the skills needed?

When you think about the qualities that a Mayor needs the following come to mind –

• The ability to not only listen, but really hear the people’s concerns; simply explain complicated issues so everyone can understand and contribute on the issues that affect the community. It also means effectively working with people of differing views and leading to accomplish a goal.

• The ability to understand budgets, revenues and expenses while making  choices based on the best interests of the Village.

• The ability to have a vision of what Woodridge can be, articulate that vision to you, motivate our friends and neighbors to work together, and then work hard to make it a reality.

• The ability to see things not as they should be but as they could be. The ability to balance competing interests providing a high quality of life.

When you think about these things you will see that I’m the only candidate in this race possessing these qualities.

A strong foundation has been built for us, and with your support I can make Woodridge even better.  We'll start with those that are responsible for running the Village on a daily basis. Village employees are one of the community’s greatest assets, and I will work diligently to make sure we develop and keep good people.  They will have the tools they need to do their job in the most efficient manner possible. We will excel in what is done well, and improve in areas that need development.

This doesn't mean micromanaging, but leading. This doesn't mean spending more money, but getting great value for the money we do spend. I believe in hiring good people, tell them what you expect and let them do their job. Help good employees be successful and we all win.

As Mayor I look forward to working with residents, businesses, other taxing bodies and staff to make Woodridge a community everyone is proud of.
