Callers Pose As Cops In Phone Scam: Woodridge Police

Police say the scammers are able to make your caller ID show that police are calling.

WOODRIDGE, IL — Police are warning residents to beware of a new phone scam that has targeted several people in Woodridge. These scammers or "spoofers" use technology to alter the caller ID on your phone so it appears that the police are calling. Once they've got you on the line, the scammer will try to get money by saying they need to settle a warrant or collect a fine.

Woodridge Police reminds residents that the police department would never as for payment by phone. They offer the following tips to protect yourself against spoofers who are impersonating the police:

  • Don not trust caller ID
  • Do not send money
  • Hang up and do not call back
  • Verify with whom you're speaking
  • File a complaint with the FTC
