Coding: For Fun & For the Future

Technology, Computer Science Education Week, National Hour of Code Movement Woodridge Public Library

Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented in computer science classes, and in the tech industry. With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on the homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code. President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign.

The Woodridge Public Library is taking part in the Hour of Code effort to bring the benefits, joys and opportunities knowing the skill of coding can bring--to anyone, at any age.

Coding Can Be Fun! on Thursday, December 8 at 7 p.m.

This program is an overview of coding presented by a library staff member. What exactly is coding? Coding is what makes it possible for us to create software, apps and websites. Learning about code helps you understand the technology shaping our world, develops problem-solving skills, and encourages creativity. We’ll explore a variety of fun and engaging resources for anyone, at any age, who wants to take the first step into the world of code.

An Hour of Code on Saturday, December 10 at 10 a.m.

Join us in the Woodridge Library Training Lab for an Hour of Code, a global movement to introduce people of all ages to computer science through a one-hour online tutorial from code.org. There are a variety of fun tutorials to choose from, such as Angry Birds, Frozen, and Minecraft. All of the tutorials are self-guided, but a staff member will be present to help you get started and to support you if you get stuck! Ages 12 and up. Bring a pair of headphones or earbuds, too!
