Mayor Names Day After Generous Woodridge Boy

Mayor Gina Cunningham said she hopes Ryan Gustis's kind acts become "contagious."

WOODRIDGE, IL — It's not every day you get a day named after you, but that's precisely what happened to one Woodridge 5th grader. Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham proclaimed January 29, 2018, Ryan Gustis Day in honor of the student's ongoing efforts to help the homeless in Chicago.

Gustis, who attends Meadowview School, has spent the past two years gathering food, gloves, scarves, and other items to pass out people without food or shelter in Chicago. He puts all the care items into backpacks and travels to Chicago to give them to those in need.

"Ryan’s a pretty amazing young boy," Cunningham said in a news release. She hopes Ryan Gustis Day will lead residents to be inspired by the child's acts of kindness.

"I hope to encourage all of our Woodridge citizens to consider how they, too, can follow in Ryan’s footsteps and ‘Do Good’ within our community through helping others," Cunningham said.

Gustis also received the Mayor's Spirit Award, along with donations from McDonald's, National Title Solutions, Giving DuPage, and West Suburban Community Pantry to help him with his cause.
