National Preparedness Week 1: Flood Preparedness
September is National Preparedness Month.

Protect yourself and your family before a flood. Taking action today can save lives and property. Here are some steps you and your family can follow to ensure your safety during a flooding event:
- Know your flood risk - learn whether you live, work, or travel through areas that are prone to flooding using FEMA’s flood insurance rate maps.
- Stay informed by listening to local media weather reports and consider buying a NOAA weather radio.
- Know your evacuation routes; plan your transportation and a place to stay. The safest way to survive a flood is to evacuate the area if advised to leave.
- Practice how you will communicate with family members - texting is often faster than calling in the event of an emergency. Keep important numbers written in your wallet, not just in your phone.
