Natural Gas Explosion Prompts Lawsuit Against Nicor
Insurance company files lawsuit against utility company claiming negligent installation led to explosion in Woodridge in 2013.

The insurance company representing Woodridge residents whose homes were damaged by a natural gas explosion is suing the utility company over claims that it was negligent and in violation of the Illinois Public Utilities Act.
State Farm Insurance Co. filed a lawsuit in DuPage County Circuit Court against Nicor Gas Company.
According to the complaint, Nicor employees were digging in the backyards of three homes on Bittersweet Court on Nov. 11, 2013. The escaping natural gas migrated through an opening in the foundation of the condominium building, which ignited an explosion at one of the residences.

State Farm paid out $106,397.62 in claims filed by residents whose homes were damaged, alleging that Nicor’s careless and negligent installation caused the explosion.
The plaintiff also states that under the Illinois Public Utilities Act, public utilities are responsible for damages due to “negligent and unlawful work.”

State Farm is asking for damages totaling the current payments made to the residents and any future damages.
