Phone Scammers Manipulate Caller ID

Never provide personal or financial information during an incoming phone call.

A Downers Grove resident reported a suspicious phone call in which the caller ID displayed his own home phone number. The resident answered, but the caller hung up.

The Downers Grove Police Department is warning residents that callers can use fake names or phone numbers to trick caller ID, according to the Village of Downers Grove. Scammers often use this to pretend to call from a financial institution or government agency.

“Per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), caller ID spoofing is illegal if it is used with the intent of defrauding, causing harm, or wrongfully obtaining anything of value,” according to the village. If you receive this kind of call, file a claim with the FCC by phone at (1-888-CALL-FCC).
