PHOTOS: Jefferson and Gower Volley for the Cure
The junior varsity and varsity teams have raised at least $1,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the second annual event.
There was plenty of pink in the gym Tuesday during Jefferson and Gower Middle School's Annual Volley for the Cure match.
Jefferson players, students and staff wore pink T-shirts (Gower wore black shirts with pink writing). Pink balloons decorated the walls. Spectators wore pink ribbons, students wore pink stickers on their shirts and faces and some players even had pink highlights.
It was the second year the two schools participated in Volley for the Cure. The event began in Ohio in 2006 when two rival high school volleyball teams decided to work together to support the fight against breast cancer. While the event has caught on at the high school level, Jefferson and Gower are two of the first junior high or middle schools to participate in the event.

Last year, the girls raised almost $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The event had raised more than $1,000 as of Tuesday's count, according to Troy Johnson, head coach of the Jefferson varisty volleyball team. Though that wasn't a final tally and that's not including profits from the concession stand run during the match.
