Willow Creek School holds an assembly to honor all Veterans who served

The assembly concluded with a walk of honor around the school. It was a wonderful display of gratitude and appreciation to all Veterans.

On Monday, November 11, the students at Willow Creek School in Woodridge, held an assembly to honor all of the men and women who served in the 6 branches of the US military. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force were represented at the assembly. The tribute to these branches started with the Willow Creek choir singing the song "Take Off Your Hats." Then the whole school stood facing the American flag and sang the National Anthem. After that, Noah Henderson and Ryan Swade (President and Vice President of the student council) explained to the students what a Veteran is and why we honor them every year on November 11. Mrs. Durkin and Mrs. Konys, (4th grade teachers and the leaders of the student council) invited each family member that was in the Armed forces to come forward and receive flowers and a pin that their grandchildren came up and gave them. The choir then sang a melody of military songs. These songs were:

  • Semper Paratus.
  • Semper Supra.
  • The U.S. Air Force.
  • Anchors Aweigh.
  • Marines' Hymn.
  • The Army Goes Rolling Along

Next up was a representative from the Honor Flight program who explained what it is and how people can get involved. The assembly concluded with each Willow Creek student holding a flag from one of the 6 branches and going on a walk of honor around the school. Along the honor walk, there were signs that gave information and facts about Veterans and what each branch was known for. At the end of the walk, each student put their flag into the ground. It was a wonderful way to show our students and our teachers how much we owe our gratitude and appreciation to all of the Veterans of the USA. A special thank you to the Willow Creek student council representatives, the choir , Mrs. Hector our music teacher for leading us in song, and Mrs. Durkin and Mrs. Konys for all of their time and effort to organize a beautiful assembly for the entire school and members of our family who served.

“The valor and courage of our young women and men in the armed services are a shining example to all of the world, and we owe them and their families our deepest respect.” — Bill Frist
