Woodridge Park District Celebrates the Retirement of Don Ritter

Ritter's last day at the District is June 30 with current Assistant Superintendent of Recreation to assume the role of Superintendent

After more than three decades of dedicated service, the Woodridge Park District celebrates the retirement of Don Ritter, Superintendent of Recreation and Deputy Director, whose career has left an enduring impact on Woodridge parks, programs, and community life. Don’s official last day with the District is June 30, 2026, marking the close of an extraordinary chapter of service.

Don joined the Woodridge Park District in 1995 and has served as Superintendent of Recreation throughout his tenure. In this role, he oversees the planning, promotion, and administration of a comprehensive recreation program, helping shape the District into the vibrant and respected organization it is today.

Don has played a pivotal role in some of the District’s most meaningful milestones. He supervises major community special events, including the long-running Woodridge Jubilee and the first-ever and now annual Woodridge Oktoberfest, helping establish traditions that continue to bring the community together. He also assisted in the design and construction of the District’s 40,000-square-foot outdoor aquatic center – opened in 1997 and expanded in 2008 – and continues to oversee its operations as it remains a cornerstone facility enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors each year. In addition, Don was also instrumental in the planning, design, construction, and operation of the 85,000-square-foot ARC facility, the District’s first dedicated athletic facility, which opened in 2017. Don continues to guide the ARC’s successful operation and growth as a vibrant community recreation hub.

A dedicated parks and recreation professional, Don earned the designation of Certified Park and Recreation Professional through the National Recreation and Park Association. His professional training includes the Executive Development Program at Indiana University and the Sports Management School at North Carolina State University. He is also certified as an Aquatic Facility Operator. Don remains actively involved at both the professional and civic levels, holding memberships with the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, the National Recreation and Park Association, and previously serving as a member of the Woodridge Lions Club.

Don’s commitment and impact has also been recognized by the Village of Woodridge when he was honored as Community Employee of the Year in 2002 and again in 2024.

While Don’s professional accomplishments are impressive, he is equally recognized for his personality and presence. His outgoing nature, positive attitude, and trademark smile embody the spirit of parks and recreation. He consistently volunteers at Park District and community events -whether that means pouring beer at special events, dressing up as a mascot, checking on ballfields, or simply lending a hand wherever one is needed. As many colleagues say, Don does it all.

Don Ritter’s legacy is defined by service, enthusiasm, and a genuine love for community recreation. As he prepares for retirement, the Woodridge Park District extends its heartfelt thanks for his leadership, mentorship, and the countless moments that help enhance the quality of life in Woodridge.

The District wishes Don all the best in his well-earned retirement and thanks him for 31 years of outstanding service to the Woodridge Park District and the community he so proudly serves.

Looking ahead, the Woodridge Park District is pleased to share that Rick Knipfer, currently serving as Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, will assume the role of Superintendent of Recreation following Don’s retirement. Rick brings a well‑rounded background of leadership and operational experience to the position, having also served the District as Customer Service Supervisor and ARC Facility Manager. Working closely with Don over the years, Rick has developed a strong understanding of the District’s recreation programs and community priorities.
