Driver Intentionally Hit 2 Pedestrians, Killing 1 In Yorkville Parking Lot: Police

YORKVILLE, IL — One pedestrian was killed and a second was injured in an intentional hit-and-run crash in a parking lot on Sunday in Yorkville, police said.

Police identified the pedestrian who was killed as 23-year-old Victor M. Hernandez Medina of Sandwich.

According to police, the two victims and suspect had arranged to meet in the parking lot in the 300 block of East Veterans Parkway before the crash. Several news outlets reported that the incident happened near Planet Fitness.

Officials say an investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle intentionally struck the two pedestrians before fleeing in the vehicle.

Officers who responded to the reported hit-and-run just before 5:15 p.m. found two people who had been struck by the vehicle, police said. Both pedestrians were taken to an area hospital with significant injuries.

By late Sunday night, Yorkville police said they had been notified that Hernandez Medina had been pronounced dead. The second victim, also an adult, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

A vehicle matching the description of the one involved in the crash was found a short time after the incident in Oswego, officials said.

"All known parties involved in the incident have been accounted for," police said in a statement Sunday night. "We have no indication there is further threat to the public."

Officials said a suspect was in custody as officers continued collecting and processing evidence. Police said they expect to release additional information on Monday.

No charges had been filed as of late Monday morning, police said.

The Kendall County Major Crimes Task Force and Illinois State Police were assisting Yorkville police with the investigation.
